Exterior Surface Identification Before Cleaning: A Field Guide

Identification comes before cleaning
Exterior materials may look similar from the ground but react differently to water, chemistry, heat, and abrasion. The first professional skill is recognizing what is actually present and whether it is sound enough to clean.
Siding and coatings
Vinyl siding can show oxidation that wipes off as chalky residue; aggressive brushing or uneven cleaning may reveal permanent color variation. Fiber cement, painted wood, engineered wood, aluminum, and stucco each have different seams, coatings, and water-entry risks. Loose paint, failed caulk, cracks, and delamination should be documented before work.
Concrete, brick, and masonry
Concrete strength, age, finish, prior sealer, and existing spalling affect method choice. Brick may be hard-fired or comparatively soft, while mortar joints can be more vulnerable than the brick itself. Efflorescence is a mineral condition and is not treated like algae. Natural stone also varies widely, so assumptions based only on color are unsafe.
Roofing, glass, and metals
Asphalt shingles are not cleaned like pavement. Granule condition, flashing, penetrations, slope, and manufacturer guidance control the plan. Tempered glass, coated glass, failed insulated-glass seals, screens, and oxidized frames require separate inspection. Aluminum, copper, painted metal, and galvanized components can react differently with cleaners.
The test-area rule
When a material or coating is uncertain, start with the least aggressive reasonable method in an inconspicuous area. Allow the test to dry before judging it. A wet surface can temporarily hide oxidation, etching, discoloration, or unevenness that becomes obvious later.
